This research looks at a variety of female smile portraits in eighteenth-century France painted by both male and female artists. Inspiring fears and sensations of disorder and sterility as well as fascination and humor, the harpy manifested itself across multiple spheres of French society in the decade that would explode in revolution. The harpy speaks to numerous concerns and issues as a symbolic monster in the eighteenth-century French imaginary. This thesis takes as its focus the "harpies" of 1784, fantastic hybrid creatures that made their first appearance in popular broadsides and pamphlets. Inspiring and subsequently shaped by visual culture such as engravings and etchings, artists, craftsmen, fashion merchants, playwrights, naturalists, and social critics alike appropriated and exploited the metaphorical power of the monster. This is especially true in early modern France, where medieval and Renaissance traditions came face to face with new scientific discoveries and enlightened theories supported by reason and a renewed interest in nature. In effect, they represent more than a fleeting fascination or simple repugnance for the horrible or misshapen "other," but rather deeper-rooted cultural conflicts and tensions. In contrast to that the final boss was just throw enough spritlings at the problem till it stops. Idk rambling at this point, but I fell that the rest of the game had a lot of interesting little puzzles throughout. After completing the first phase with no deaths only to have the boss wipe out a random number of each type suffice to say it was annoying. I was playing the game trying to keep my spriteling deaths to a minimum and this kind of just made me give up on trying to keep them alive. I went in fully stocked with useful items and felt all I really needed was healing items since it constantly just gives you spritelings if you lose them. My last note (SPOILER WARNING) is that the final battle was a mess. I hate bringing them into anything since they are just a huge liability. I think shiverlings should deal less damage rather than have less health. To a lesser extent reminds me of how purple pikmin removed red pikmin's usefulness in combat. The barblings outclass the combat oriented emberlings greatly since if you aren't trying to lose spritelings you are recalling them after one or two attacks to evade enemy attacks. I think the combat could use some work if a sequel is made. Wonderful game that wears its influences on its sleeve.
